An operating room nurse, also called a perioperative nurse, provides care for patients before, during, and after surgery. They work as part of a surgical team to prepare the operating room, assist the surgeon, and care for the patient's immediate post-operative needs. Their roles include prepping patients, monitoring them during procedures, and providing crucial support in the recovery phase. Key responsibilities

  • Before surgery:
  • Educate patients and address their fears.
  • Complete pre-operative paperwork.
  • Monitor patient vital signs and prepare them for the procedure.
  • During surgery:
  • Prepare the operating room and ensure it is sterile.
  • Act as a "scrub nurse," passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
  • Function as a "circulating nurse," managing the overall nursing care in the room and helping maintain a safe environment.
  • Position the patient and monitor their condition.
  • After surgery:
  • Monitor patients in the recovery room.
  • Provide immediate post-operative care and update family members.

Specializations

  • Pre-operative nurse: Focuses on the patient's care before the operation begins.
  • Intra-operative nurse: Provides direct care to the patient during the procedure.
  • Post-operative nurse: Cares for the patient immediately after the surgery in the recovery phase.

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered nurse (RN).
  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) is the minimum education, but many employers prefer or require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience in a hospital setting, especially as a new graduate with an internship, is often required.
  • Certification, such as the CNOR credential, is available for those who meet specific standards of practice.
