VP of Operations – Construction Company

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vice President of Operations to lead and manage our design, engineering, and construction teams. The VP of Operations will oversee the operational aspects of the business, including project management, design and engineering execution, costing, and sales activities. This leadership position requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the construction industry, coupled with hands-on experience in managing large-scale projects, developing budgets, and ensuring quality. The ideal candidate will bring at least 5 years of experience in a Director or VP-level role and have a proven track record in managing complex construction projects from design to completion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership & Management:
Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the design, engineering, and construction teams.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to project managers, engineers, and other key staff members, ensuring they adhere to company goals and timelines.
Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. - Project Management & Execution:
Direct and manage the execution of all design and construction projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
Develop detailed project plans, set milestones, and allocate resources effectively.
Monitor project performance and adjust timelines and resources as necessary to ensure successful outcomes. - Design & Engineering Oversight:
Collaborate with the design and engineering teams to ensure that all projects are designed to meet client requirements, budget constraints, and quality standards.
Provide strategic direction for the design and engineering processes, ensuring that all designs are feasible and compliant with regulatory requirements.
Review and approve design concepts, plans, and specifications. - Costing & Budgeting:
Develop and manage comprehensive project budgets, ensuring accurate cost estimates, tracking, and reporting throughout the lifecycle of each project.
Oversee the preparation of cost proposals for new projects and coordinate with the sales team to ensure proper pricing and cost management.
Implement cost control measures to maintain profitability and reduce unnecessary expenses. - Sales & Business Development:
Work closely with the sales and business development teams to identify and pursue new project opportunities.
Participate in client meetings and presentations, providing technical expertise and insight to support sales efforts.
Assist in negotiating contracts and terms with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers. - Quality Control & Risk Management:
Ensure all projects meet the company's quality standards and industry regulations.
Identify risks in design, construction, and budget, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
Enforce safety protocols and ensure a safe working environment for all employees and subcontractors. - Strategic Planning & Reporting:
Develop and execute operational strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction.
Provide regular reports to the CEO and other senior executives regarding the status of projects, operational performance, and any potential issues.
Analyze operational data and make data-driven decisions to optimize performance and profitability. - Client and Stakeholder Management:
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
Serve as the primary point of contact for major clients, ensuring ongoing communication and satisfaction.
Resolve conflicts or issues with clients, contractors, or vendors to maintain positive business relationships.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (Master's or MBA preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Director or VP-level position in the construction industry, with a focus on project management, design, engineering, and operations.
Proven track record of successfully leading and managing large-scale construction projects from inception to completion. - Skills & Expertise:
In-depth knowledge of construction processes, project management methodologies, design and engineering principles, and building codes and regulations.
Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting, cost estimation, and financial reporting.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage and motivate cross-functional teams.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
Proficient in construction management software, project management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). - Personal Attributes:
