Systems Engineer II

This position performs moderately difficult research, design, and systems engineering assignments and also responds to system management alerts to handle system/operations exceptions, within the assigned enterprise systems of product offerings. Additionally, this position is also responsible for triage change management support.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide Level 1 and Level 2 on-call support for Unix/Linux systems, quickly responding to incidents and service requests.
  2. Manage and resolve Unix/Linux system issues, applying security patches and performing system upgrades to ensure compliance, security, and reliability.
  3. Schedule, coordinate, and implement Unix/Linux system changes, following Change Management policies to minimize operational disruptions.
  4. Provision new Unix/Linux server builds and configurations in accordance with organizational standards and security protocols.
  5. Execute capacity planning and implement growth requests for storage, CPU, and memory to support evolving business needs.
  6. Perform system monitoring and proactively address potential issues to maintain optimal performance and system availability.
  7. Apply performance tuning practices and recommendations to optimize Unix/Linux system operations.
  8. Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency, security, and reliability of Unix/Linux systems.
  9. Oversee proper delegation of accounts and privileges, adhering to security standards.
  10. Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including IT and infrastructure teams, to support project and operational objectives.

Requirements:

  1. Education: A bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  2. Experience:
    1. 3–5 years of experience in Unix/Linux server administration, with expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) versions 7 and later, and Solaris.
    2. Demonstrated experience in system upgrades, patch management, and proactive security updates on Unix/Linux systems.
  1. Technical Skills:
    1. Proficiency in Red Hat and Solaris operating systems, including provisioning, configuration, and server management.
    2. Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMware ESX and Solaris virtualization (LDOMs, Zones).
    3. Strong scripting skills (Bash-required, Python & Perl-good to have) and experience with configuration management and automation tools, specifically Ansible and YAML.
    4. Solid understanding of networking concepts, SAN and NAS storage, and configuration management.
    5. Experience with system performance monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning to support high availability.
  2. Problem-Solving: Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities, capable of resolving complex Unix/Linux system issues in high-pressure environments.
  3. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to team members and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Willingness to learn and stay current with emerging technologies, including cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, though these are not currently required for this role.
  2. Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and other configuration management tools.
  3. Familiarity with additional open-source technologies and related security practices, including data encryption and masking.
  4. Certifications: Relevant Unix/Linux certifications (e.g., Red Hat Certified Engineer) are preferred; cloud-related certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) are a plus.
