Consumer & Technical Insights Director (R&D)

Job Purpose:

This role leads the strategic integration of consumer and technical insights into product development, ensuring innovations are rooted in real consumer needs, validated through rigorous sensory and performance testing, and differentiated from competition. The CTI Leader translates behavioral insights into measurable design criteria, substantiates product claims, and drives scientific validation of performance and stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consumer-to-Technical Translation: Convert consumer insights and pain points into actionable R&D design inputs and performance targets.
  • Claims Development & Validation: Lead claims roadmap, ensuring compliance, scientific substantiation, and superiority testing.
  • Sensory & Performance Science: Institutionalize sensory protocols and performance testing to guide formulation and optimization.
  • Benchmarking & Competitive Mapping: Build systems to track competitor products, claims, and technical gaps to inform superiority goals.
  • Testing & Validation: Oversee CUT/HUT and technical studies, ensuring early validation and alignment with QA and Regulatory.
  • Leadership & Capability Building: Mentor cross-functional teams in sensory science, claims, benchmarking, and insight technologies.
  • Collaboration: Partner with R&D, Marketing (CIA), Regulatory, and external stakeholders to embed insights into innovation pipelines.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in FMCG R&D, Consumer Science, Sensory, or Product Research, with leadership experience in consumer-to-technical translation.
  • Strong background in claim substantiation, sensory testing, and regulatory standards (PH FDA, ASEAN, EU).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Behavioral Science, or related field; Master’s/PhD preferred.
  • Skilled in sensory and testing software (e.g., Compusense, EyeQuestion, Qualtrics) and analytics tools (Excel, JMP, R, Python).
