Your Role

• Provide mentorship to design staff, overseeing milestones and deliverables, and facilitating internal sign-offs with leadership. Work with the Design Operations Manager to ensure design intent is met and user experience is of the highest quality.
• Monitor workload, design tools (templates, paragraph styles, character styles, bleed) and resource allocation to meet timelines and business objectives.
• Oversee workload by assigning projects to design staff as needed.
• Provide experiences and training that maintain the highest level of competency among designers. Influence project direction as an integral part of the design team.
• Mentor others by sharing business and design expertise.
• Encourage staff to recognize opportunities to improve adverts and to send design ideas to the relevant sales person for client discussions.
• Perform other tasks as needed by the Design Operations Team Manager and the Creative Services Department.

Team Targets and Deliverables

• Develop and manage the design scope of all project work, including Advertising Production (Advert, Editorial, Classie), Senior Graphic Design Projects, and Admin Themes.
• Coordinate all design deliverables from assignment through completion with quality sign-offs, including layouts, design packages, image processing, bleed management, and documentation of design quality.
• Lead coordination of all design disciplines on a team of senior designers and prepress specialists to deliver multiple, high-quality tasks in line with brand standards.
• Manage external consultants and coordinate with offshore designers on all projects.
• Provide mentorship and monthly performance feedback to design team members.
• Ensure all design scope and deliverables comply with templates and established standards; institute documentation and project management standards.
• Communicate project updates to management and cross-functional teams, including risks and issues.
• Make critical path decisions to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery with exceptional design quality.
• Lead onsite and external team meetings with clear, actionable agendas.

Reporting and Collaboration

• Direct reporting to the Star News Group Design Operations Manager and manage calendar conflicts, staffing requirements, and leave management.
• Collaborate with Assistant Design Team Managers and Senior Designers to increase efficiencies and ensure design excellence.
• Coordinate with other departments and design points of contact to implement agreed changes.
• Provide end-of-day team reporting and ensure quality and compliance through written and verbal communications.
• Facilitate creative reviews and align milestones with MS operations teams to optimize timing.
• Support policy, process improvements, and cross-functional alignment within the studio.
• Handle unplanned day-to-day operational tasks and represent design leadership in cross-functional forums.

Staffing and Training

• Ensure incentive, recognition and retention targets are implemented.
• Implement training plans to enhance skills and competencies; align with Individual Development Plans.
• Foster an environment of mentoring and coaching to support development and high performance.
• Identify potential future talent to support retention strategies.
• Apply MS-approved policies on disciplinary and performance management in a compliant manner.

What You Need

• College graduate
• Highly skilled in English (written and verbal)
• Supervisory experience with conflict resolution and feedback
• Experience in training and developing staff
