An aircon technician's job description includes installing, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Responsibilities range from performing routine maintenance like cleaning filters and coils to diagnosing and fixing mechanical or electrical issues, and safely handling refrigerants. The role also involves customer service, documentation, and sometimes general building maintenance like minor plumbing or carpentry repairs.

Core responsibilities

  • Installation: Install new air conditioning and refrigeration systems according to specifications.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on systems, including cleaning coils, filters, and drain pans, and lubricating bearings.
  • Repair: Diagnose problems, troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues, and repair or replace parts like motors, compressors, thermostats, and belts.
  • Refrigerant handling: Safely handle and recharge refrigerants in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • System testing: Test units after installation or repair to ensure they are working correctly.

Additional tasks

  • General maintenance: Perform minor repairs on related systems, such as plumbing (leaks, clogs) or electrical (fixtures, bulbs).
  • Customer service: Explain technical issues to clients and address their concerns.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of service calls, repairs, and maintenance performed.
  • Project assistance: Assist supervisors with planning new installations or modifications.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Technical skills: Strong knowledge of air conditioning systems, electrical components, and refrigeration principles.
  • Physical ability: Ability to perform physical tasks like climbing, bending, and working in various conditions.
  • Education: High school diploma or vocational certificate, with experience in HVAC is preferred.
