JOB SUMMARY

The Hydraulic Modeller role involves supporting UK water industry clients in delivering capital investment programmes and maintaining their drainage networks. This includes enhancing existing hydraulic models by incorporating growth, refinement, and detailed analysis to improve the accuracy of network performance predictions. The models focus on foul and stormwater systems, which may include pumped flows, overflows, and storage structures.

Work is based on integrating various client datasets, system records, and site-based surveys to optimize model functionality. Deliverables range from strategic catchment reviews to the development of drainage strategies for both small rural communities and large urban populations. The role also provides reactive support through bespoke assessments of network conditions to identify service failures and recommend mitigation solutions.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a technical resource responsible for the development, verification, operation, and maintenance of 1D hydraulic models for foul, storm, and combined drainage networks across both urban and rural areas.
  • Conduct performance analysis of drainage systems to evaluate compliance or identify failures against required levels of service.
  • Build hydraulic models that accurately represent drainage infrastructure including overflows, pumping stations, tanks, and control structures.
  • Simulate various hydraulic scenarios such as design storms, climate change impacts, and operational interventions to assess system behavior and resilience.
  • Identify system capacity constraints and hydraulic deficiencies, and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Understand flooding mechanisms and the interaction of different system components to support planning and emergency response.
  • Handle large datasets such as GIS layers, LiDAR, telemetry, and asset records for model input and analysis.
  • Perform data cleaning, spatial analysis, and integration of diverse data sources to improve model reliability.
  • Prepare technical reports and clearly communicate results and recommendations to clients, regulators, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • (Desirable) Automate modelling workflows or data handling tasks using Python, SQL, or built-in scripting tools.

  • GIS Software: QGIS or equivalent platforms
  • Standards Familiarity: CIWEM UDG Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling Guide and applicable client-specific modelling protocols
