Role Summary

The Lead Software Engineer is a senior, hands-on technical leader responsible for building and delivering high-quality, user-centred software products in a fast-paced startup environment. This role combines active development with team leadership, working primarily with TypeScript, React, APIs, and Cloudflare. You will guide a small engineering team while contributing directly to product delivery and technical direction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a small team of software engineers, promoting clean code, best practices, and effective collaboration.
  • Deliver key product features through hands-on development across front-end, back-end, and API layers.
  • Translate product designs and requirements into clear, practical technical specifications.
  • Lead software projects, including code reviews, stand-ups, and management of delivery timelines.
  • Support short-term delivery needs while contributing to longer-term technical and team capability growth.
  • Participate in light people management and associated HR responsibilities for a team of 2–5 engineers.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 10 years' professional software development experience, including at least 2 years leading or managing engineers.
  • Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript (mandatory), including React-based front ends and API development.
  • Experience working with modern cloud platforms, ideally Cloudflare, with exposure to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Proven ability to lead the full software development lifecycle from analysis and design through to deployment.
  • Experience working in agile environments with a pragmatic, outcomes-focused approach.
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps and automation tools such as GitHub Actions.
  • Strong written and verbal professional English, with experience collaborating across distributed teams.

Familiarity (Advantageous but Not Required):

  • Experience in EdTech or data-driven product environments.
  • Exposure to data platforms such as PostgreSQL, BigQuery, or DuckDB.
  • Experience working in high-growth startup environments.
