About 1882 Energy Ventures
1882 Energy Ventures is a venture studio accelerating the global energy transition by building and scaling startups that decentralize energy systems—reshaping how homes, businesses, mobility, and networks are powered. By advancing decentralization, we drive decarbonization, enhance energy efficiency, and fuel long-term economic growth and development in the Philippines and beyond.
The Venture
OpenPower unlocks investment capital for decentralized energy by giving midscale developers access to flexible financing, risk assessment, and payment management. We enable developers to offer zero-downpayment financing to their customers, driving capital into small-scale DER projects while ensuring transparency for investors. By streamlining risk evaluation, capital deployment, and payment collection, OpenPower accelerates decentralized energy adoption in emerging markets.
About the Role
As the founding CTO of OpenPower, you will lead the development of our core technology platform that enables scalable, efficient financing for midscale renewable energy projects. You'll design and build the tools that underpin developer onboarding, project risk assessment, credit scoring, and investor reporting. Your work will directly shape how capital flows into underserved clean energy markets.
This is a foundational leadership role at the intersection of climate, finance, and technology. You'll collaborate closely with the Risk, Product, and Investment teams to turn underwriting and diligence workflows into intuitive, data-driven digital processes. You will also oversee the technical roadmap, manage engineers and vendors, and ensure that our platform scales with trust and agility.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Strategy & Platform Architecture
- Define OpenPower's long-term technical roadmap and data architecture in line with the venture's growth and fund deployment goals
- Design systems for project tracking, developer evaluation, credit scoring, and investor reporting that are modular, secure, and scalable
- Build or integrate tools that automate key workflows such as developer onboarding, project qualification, and risk monitoring
Product Development & Delivery
- Lead cross-functional development of MVPs and core features to support project diligence, fund operations, and developer services
- Translate user and risk requirements into functional specs, wireframes, and technical documentation
- Oversee the execution of product sprints, QA testing, and version rollouts in coordination with internal and external teams
Data & Analytics Infrastructure
- Design data models and backend logic to support credit scoring, portfolio monitoring, and ESG reporting
- Ensure reliable data flows from developers, partners, and internal tools to power dashboards, investor reports, and fund performance analytics
- Implement secure, traceable data pipelines with clear ownership, validation rules, and update protocols
Engineering Leadership & Team Building
- Recruit, manage, and mentor a high-performing engineering team, including backend/frontend developers and data engineers
- Establish coding standards, development processes, and internal tooling that promote collaboration and velocity
- Manage third-party vendors or dev shops as needed, ensuring delivery quality and platform continuity
Security, Compliance & Integrations
- Ensure all systems comply with relevant security, privacy, and regulatory standards (e.g., KYC/AML for developers, data protection for offtakers)
- Build or integrate with tools required for investor compliance (e.g., audit logs, traceability, impact reporting)
- Develop and manage secure APIs and integrations with ecosystem partners (e.g., credit bureaus, energy platforms, insurers)
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, product development, or technology leadership, ideally in fintech, energy, or infrastructure platforms
- Proven experience architecting and shipping complex B2B or data-driven platforms from early stage to scale
- Familiarity with credit scoring, financial underwriting, or risk analytics a strong plus
- Experience building secure and reliable platforms that handle sensitive commercial or customer data
- Strong systems thinking and ability to translate business, investment, and risk requirements into intuitive digital workflows
- Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional teams, coordinate vendors, and deliver under time and resource constraints
- Entrepreneurial, mission-driven mindset with a bias for action and comfort in ambiguity
- Strong communication skills—able to align engineering work with investor, product, and compliance expectations
- Passionate about building tools that enable the clean energy transition and unlock capital for underserved market
