The Head Nurse supports the Nurse Manager by providing direct supervision and leadership to nursing staff within a specific unit or clinical area of assignment. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care by overseeing daily nursing operations, coordinating clinical activities, and fostering a positive work environment.
The Head Nurse acts as a key link between frontline nursing staff and the Nurse Manager, facilitating effective communication, staff development, and compliance with hospital policies.
Leadership & Staff Supervision
Supervise and support nursing staff in the assigned unit, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and hospital standards.
Assist the Nurse Manager with performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development of nursing personnel.
Clinical Operations & Patient Care
Oversee the day-to-day clinical activities to ensure safe and effective patient care delivery.
Monitor and ensure accurate documentation, patient assessments, and care plans are maintained.
Staffing & Scheduling
- Primarily responsible for preparing the unit's staff schedule.
- Collaborate with the Nurse Manager to ensure adequate coverage and balanced work distribution.
- Identify staffing needs and assist in managing shift assignments, including temporary adjustments due to absenteeism or patient census fluctuations. Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Assist in monitoring compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and infection control protocols within the unit.
- Participate in quality improvement activities, clinical audits, and incident reporting processes.
- Support implementation of corrective actions to address identified clinical or operational issues.
Operational Management
Collaborate with the Nurse Manager and other leadership to assist in the creation of the unit's budget preparation.
Assist in the allocation of resources based on unit needs and budget constraints.
Inventory Management and Supply Operations:
Oversee the inventory of all medical related supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels for daily operations.
Track supply utilization and preparation of the necessary reports or documentation required.
Ensure that supplies are stored properly and are readily available when needed, while minimizing waste and overstocking.
Collaboration and Reporting:
Report regularly to the immediate Nurse Manager for coordination, updating or any significant concerns.
Participate in leadership meetings and contribute to strategic decision-making processes.
Primarily responsible for the unit's accreditation and regulatory requirements, ensuring that all required standards are met
Other tasks may be assigned from time to time in the exigency of service.
Educational Qualification
- Licensed/Registered Nurse
- A minimum of nine (20) units of master's degree in nursing or related field is required. (MAN,MSN,MN)
Experience
- At least two (3) years staff nurse position or assigned as in-charge at least one (1) year.
- Certificate of training or affiliation with Nursing related programs.
- Active participation and affiliation with various nursing management organizations is advantageous.
