  • Milling cutter: A multi-tooth cutting tool that is mounted on a spindle or arbor and rotates at high speed.
  • Workpiece: The material is clamped to a table or vise, which moves it against the rotating cutter.
  • Spindle: The part of the machine that holds and rotates the milling cutter.
  • Table movement: The workpiece can be fed in three main directions: longitudinal (X-axis), cross (Y-axis), and vertical (Z-axis).
  • Chip removal: As the cutter rotates and the workpiece is fed, the teeth of the cutter shave off small chips of material, shaping the workpiece.

Common milling operations

  • Face milling: Uses a face milling cutter to create a flat, machined surface on the workpiece.
  • Plain milling: Involves using a cutter to machine a flat surface or a series of grooves on a workpiece.
  • End milling: Achieved with an end mill, which can create flat surfaces, slots, or intricate profiles on vertical, horizontal, or angular surfaces.
  • Side milling: Mills a surface on the side of a workpiece.
  • Straddle milling: Uses two side milling cutters on the same arbor to mill two parallel surfaces at once.
  • Form milling: Creates irregular or curved contours using a form cutter with a specific shape, such as cutting gears or turbine blades.

Safety considerations

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment , including safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and ear protection.
  • Keep hands, clothing, and hair away from the rotating parts and cutting tools.
  • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before starting the machine.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location of the emergency brake.
  • Do not change the spindle speed while the spindle is off.
  • Use the correct drawbar tension to secure the cutter.
