Job Description

As a Senior Australian Tax Accountant, you'll take the lead in handling tax and accounting assignments, reviewing junior staff's work, and preparing financial statements. You'll also support Seniors and Managers in managing medium to complex assignments while enhancing your technical expertise and leadership skills.

The Qualifications We Seek

Experience, Skills & Knowledge

  • 4-5 years of Australian accounting experience, with strong technical knowledge and the ability to prepare tax reconciliations independently
  • Degree from a recognized university eligible for CPA Program entry
  • Currently undertaking or recently completed the CPA Program
  • 2-3 years of relevant tax accounting experience in a professional services setting
  • Willing to work onsite in Makati
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including business writing, spelling, and grammar
  • Able to work independently on smaller assignments and take initiative without constant supervision
  • Effective at analyzing problems, researching solutions, and making sound decisions
  • Follows instructions carefully, balances independent problem-solving with knowing when to ask for help
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality, including self-review of work
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to manage tasks and meet deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills, active listener, and responsive to feedback
  • Customer-focused, with the ability to gather and act on client feedback
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships within a team
  • Basic experience in supervising and training staff, including task delegation and feedback
  • Quick to apply new knowledge and skills in different scenarios
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Experience with accounting tools such as APS Tax, XPA, Xero, MYOB, ATO tax portal, and CCH online resources

Your Daily Tasks

  • Manage tax and accounting assignments, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  • Assist in complex projects, applying your growing technical knowledge.
  • Provide mentoring, delegate tasks, and supervise staff effectively.
  • Develop financial statements for various entities, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Conduct initial reviews of team outputs, giving clear feedback for improvement.
  • Oversee tax calculations, reconciliations, and preparation of tax returns and schedules.
  • Maintain clear documentation and keep senior staff updated on progress.
  • Identify potential issues in assignments and collaborate with senior staff to resolve them.
  • Complete all core tasks as listed on the Process Management Platform (PMP) process maps.
  • Prepare accounting compliance work following standard procedures, including:

  • Gathering information requirements based on prior period and checklist.

  • Checking client software/documentation for correlation with HLB's prior period financial statements.
  • Classifying and entering transactions to GL accounts in client software (e.g., MYOB, Xero, QuickBooks).
  • Preparing account reconciliations using a pre-defined checklist for clients.
  • Preparing substantiating documentation (work papers).
  • Identifying exceptions and preparing queries for clients or team leaders.
  • Preparing and entering adjusting journal entries.
  • Creating financial statements for companies, trusts, and partnerships.
  • Compiling final financial statements and drafting accompanying advisory letters.

  • Prepare income tax returns and related schedules for individuals, partnerships, trusts, and companies.

  • Review financial statements, identify tax reconciliation items, and prepare tax calculations.
  • Prepare Business Activity Statements from client summaries or accounting software.
  • Prepare Fringe Benefit Tax returns and related client communications.
  • Complete checklists, prepare tax assessment letters, and compile Instalment Activity Statements and annual GST returns.
  • Write clear, well-documented file notes and maintain effective communication with senior staff.
  • Provide timely updates and seek assistance as needed to resolve issues.
  • Participate in process management/administration by:

  • Completing standard administrative tasks as instructed.

  • Maintaining accurate timesheets and supporting other team members.
  • Assisting with budget and bill preparation as needed.

  • Manage your own workflow, review hours spent on assignments, and adjust priorities as necessary.

  • Clarify tasks, requirements, and deadlines with colleagues.
  • Provide progress updates to supervisors and follow up on assigned work.
  • Strengthen technical knowledge through self-education, training, and collaboration with team members.
  • Participate in firm-wide training and contribute to team meetings.
  • Perform staff management tasks, including task assignment, clarification, and initial reviews of team outputs.
  • Monitor team budgets, provide guidance, and escalate issues when required.
  • Offer mentorship and on-the-job training to junior staff.
  • Act as a mentor, guide career development discussions, and assist with staff performance management.
  • Provide training and presentations for local teams as needed.
