A building engineer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and optimization of building systems like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Their duties include performing regular inspections, responding to emergencies, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and building codes. This role also involves preventive maintenance, energy management, and keeping detailed records of all activities and repairs. Key responsibilities

  • Maintenance and repairs: Conduct routine inspections of all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, elevators) and perform minor repairs to ensure proper functioning.
  • Preventive maintenance: Develop and execute preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and costs and increase energy efficiency.
  • Emergency response: Respond to emergency maintenance requests in a timely manner and assess the building for potential safety hazards.
  • Compliance: Ensure all building systems and maintenance activities comply with safety standards, building codes, and government regulations.
  • Vendor and contractor management: Coordinate with and manage outside vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance and repair services.
  • Record keeping: Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance, repairs, and equipment performance.
  • Energy management: Monitor building energy usage and implement energy-saving measures to optimize efficiency.
  • Project support: Assist with tenant fit-out processes and provide reports to management on building operations and maintenance.
  • Safety: Ensure that all safety regulations and building codes are followed throughout the facility.

Qualifications and skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of engineering principles and building systems.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work on their own initiative.
  • Knowledge of building and construction standards.
  • Proficiency with computer software, especially for record-keeping and management.
  • Often requires professional licensure, such as a professional engineer (PE) or licensed civil engineer certification.
