The Network & Systems Engineer delivers proactive network monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, and escalations for diverse environments including cloud, on-premises, and hybrid infrastructures. The role balances hands-on proficiency with real-time communications, ticket management, and process improvement.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Technical Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support environments using VMware, Cisco, Palo Alto, Meraki, Fortinet, Juniper, and related vendors.
  • Open ISP tickets and manage communications for network outages or degradations.
  • Perform basic and intermediate network troubleshooting (connectivity, routing, VLANs, DNS, DHCP).
  • Apply firewall and network OS updates (basic patching and version management).
  • Troubleshoot basic system, endpoint issues for servers and network appliances.
  • Conduct DNS & DHCP administration and troubleshooting.
  • Support routing and VLAN configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Utilize and manage network monitoring tools (LogicMonitor, PRTG, SolarWinds, etc.).
  • Perform basic firewall administration (policy changes, rules, port management).
  • Work with AWS and Azure cloud networking and basic administration (preferred).
  • Track and resolve tickets within MSP ticketing platforms (ConnectWise, FreshService, Dell Kace, etc.).

Support & Operations

  • Conduct first-level response and incident triage and escalate to Tier 2/3 engineers as needed.
  • Document all incidents, actions, and resolutions within ticketing systems.
  • Collaborate with vendors, service providers (ISP), and other technical teams for resolution of ongoing issues.
  • Perform scheduled patching and basic system updates for network appliances and operating systems.
  • Implement approved production changes that have been authorized via change control and incident resolution processes.
QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Experience & Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience and certifications with major vendors: VMware, Cisco, Palo Alto, Meraki, Fortinet, Juniper, etc.
  • Successful prior work in an MSP or managed IT environment.
  • Scripting ability in PowerShell and/or Python (automation, data parsing, ticketing workflows).
  • Exposure to compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC 2, NIST, PCI-DSS, etc.)

Soft Skills & Professionalism

  • Excellent verbal and written communications required for internal and client-facing work.
  • Strong customer service attitude: able to remain calm under pressure and manage expectations.
  • Time management and prioritization skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced service environment.
  • Willingness to mentor and assist other Tier 1-2 personnel and collaborate for continuous process improvement.

Education & Certification

  • Associate or Bachelor's in IT, Computer Science, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience accepted.
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Fortinet NSE 4, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure Administrator, or VMware VCP highly desirable.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Should be willing to accept a long-term work-from-home arrangement.
  • Should be amenable to a permanent night shift schedule.
