JOB SUMMARY
As a highly specialized healthcare professional, the Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist plays a vital role in the assessment of radiotherapy equipment and facilities.
In clinical practice, the primary responsibility is to develop and maintain a comprehensive quality assurance program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures, and computational equipment. This ensures that patients receive prescribed doses and dose distributions with a high degree of accuracy, supporting both patient safety and treatment efficacy.
S/He ensures that quality radiation therapy service based on hospital policies, national and international standards and protocols is carried out in a timely manner. S/He leads continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities to continuously develop the quality of service in the department.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Determines doses from radiological procedures;
- Assures that the use of good radiological technique by the technologists (i.e. proper collimation and optimization of the radiation protection program)
- Participates in the institutional radiation safety committee and other committees as appropriate (e.g. medical isotope committee);
- Determines shielding required for new or renovated equipment rooms for ionizing radiation and for radiofrequency and magnetic fields;
- Participates in the development of maintenance quality management program for all imaging equipment to facilitate the production of images of optimum quality while minimizing radiation doses to patients;
- Develops and administer the radiation safety program;
- Responsible for all instrumentation required for quality control, image quality, and patient exposure measurements;
- Ensures acceptance testing and performance verification;
- Ensures availability of documentation on the calibration, preventive maintenance, repair of equipment and all relevant information;
- Participates in the development and implementation of a cost containment program for medical physics activities and imaging equipment;
- Recommends changes and updates in processes, policies, procedures, or standards in the department to improve quality of service.
- Recommends equipment usage and replacement whenever deemed appropriate;
- Reviews and recommends remedial action/(s) to correct any deficiencies identified in the radiation safety program;
- Participates in the development of criteria for approval of new users of radiation;
- Guides employee actions through one's consistent practice and implementation of department's policies, procedures, methods and guidelines.
- Supervises the preparation, handling, and disposal of radionuclides; (special training and certification required) c/o PNRI
- Participates in new facility design and development; and design of special shielding devices
- Continuing safety education for all employees in the institution who are exposed to ionizing radiation or working in the vicinity of magnetic resonance imaging systems;
- Continuing education for institutional employees regarding other safety-related issues such as radioactive waste, etc.
- May be assigned in a project that aims to improve specific areas, working independently or with a cross-functional team. May be tasked to make necessary recommendations on performance of team members or cross-functional team member.
- May be tasked to lead cross-functional team to deliver projects or special tasks designed to improve specific areas of services in the hospital such as, but not limited to, process improvement, review of policies, etc.
- Conducts didactic and laboratory teaching for radiography students and other students in diagnostic imaging programs;
- Continuing education for imaging physicians, nurses, technologists, and other as applicable;
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a Master's Degree in Medical Physics
- Relevant work experience or equivalent accredited highly skills-based specialized training hours/units.
- Must be keen on scientific methodology and systematic approach to problems or tasks.
- Ability to handle QA on diagnostic devices and radiation therapy equipment
- Ability to conduct treatment planning
- Healthcare industry experience is a plus.
- Excellent patient and customer relation skills
- Demonstrated understanding of basic corporate office software, including Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in the Visayan dialect and/or Tagalog is required.
