About the Company
Our client is a fast-expanding retention marketing agency trusted by brands looking to scale with intention. They combine strategic insight, clear communication, and high-level execution to deliver email and SMS programs that drive real revenue. They are at an exciting stage of growth and are looking for an Email Marketing Strategist who wants to build, innovate, and help shape the future of their retention department.
About the Role
Right now, the agency is at a turning point – demand is growing faster than internal capacity. Clients trust us because we don't just send emails… we move revenue. But to continue scaling without compromising quality, we need an Email Marketing Strategist who can own retention the same way the CEO used to: thoughtfully, strategically, and with high standards.
This isn't a "fill gaps" hire; it's a foundational role. The person in this seat will shape how we plan, deliver, optimize, and scale retention across multiple brands. As we grow, this role has a lot of potential to evolve into Head of Retention, where you would be influencing how the entire retention department operates.

We're looking for an Email Marketing Strategist who thinks before they build — someone who approaches retention and lifecycle marketing with intention, clarity, and data-backed logic.
You understand customer psychology, segmentation, and the real drivers behind Email/SMS performance. "Pretty emails" aren't enough for you — you care about impact: revenue, engagement, and sustainable growth.
You're someone who takes ownership, not someone who waits for direction. You can quickly spot weak points in copy, logic gaps in flows, or unnecessary bloat, and you know how to guide a team toward stronger execution (without needing to write every word yourself).
If you've ever felt limited as "just an executor," this role gives you room to step into strategy, leadership, and eventually grow into Head of Retention.
Responsibilities
You are responsible for planning, auditing, owning, and improving all email/SMS strategy across accounts – ensuring execution is on-brand, on-time, and revenue-driven.
This includes:
Strategy & Planning
- Build and maintain the email + SMS calendars for each client – nothing goes out without you knowing why, when, and where it fits in the lifecycle.
- Lead flow strategy, segmentation, logic, and optimization based on data, not guesswork.
- Keep all efforts aligned to revenue targets, conversion priorities, and lifecycle stage – not "because it's time to send something."
Quality Control
- Review and approve copy and design before it reaches a client. Not just spelling, but structure, clarity, persuasion, and tone.
- Ensure deliverables follow best practices (clarity first, emotional logic, CTA hierarchy, skimmability).
- Reduce revisions – your approvals should replace CEO review entirely.
Performance & Optimization
- Own strategic and data-driven monthly reporting and insights – including what's working, what's not, and what changes next.Spot revenue gaps early and turn them into clear priorities (flows, segmentation, tests, content updates).
- Drive improvements through to completion — strategy → assignment → implementation → verification.
- Your success metric: consistent month-over-month performance lifts, not busywork.
Internal Leadership
- Work closely with the team to ensure execution is smooth and on schedule
- Assign tasks, set expectations, and keep delivery on schedule without last-minute scrambling.
- Work with PM/VA to keep projects moving smoothly and prevent bottlenecks before they form.
Systems
- Build and enforce clear SOPs with our operations manager for strategy, review, QA, reporting, and handoffs.
- Improve systems as we grow so the business becomes easier to run
- The outcome: delivery becomes predictable, repeatable, and scalable
Client Interactions
- Initially support behind the scenes while learning client tone, patterns, and performance priorities.
- Over time, take ownership of strategic responses in clients' Slack channels..
- Eventually lead strategic check-in calls and present reporting.
Success Metrics (KPIs)
You know you're winning if:
- Clients feel supported, confident, and excited about our work – not chasing updates or requesting clarification.
- Our email/SMS accounts show healthy, consistent growth month over month (engagement, revenue attribution, deliverability, AOV/LTV uplift where applicable).
- Strategy → copy → design → execution flows smoothly, with fewer revisions and fewer steps required from leadership.
- You proactively identify opportunities, bottlenecks, and optimizations before anyone asks – and implement a plan to execute.
- The team feels aligned, clear, and empowered because expectations, priorities, and standards are consistently communicated and upheld. If you have read this, include the word "latte" in a sentence in the first line of your proposal.
- Delivery runs cleanly without CEO involvement, because the strategy, standards, and execution are predictable and owned.
Competencies and QualificationsMust-Have:
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in Klaviyo email and SMS strategy – not just building templates, but owning performance.
- Familiarity with DTC/Ecommerce brands where emotional connection and customer lifecycle matter.
- A strong grasp of lifecycle marketing, segmentation, deliverability, and retention psychology.
- Experience improving metrics like open rates, CTR, CVR, revenue attribution, and list health.
- A sharp eye for quality – you can identify weak copy or design and guide the team to elevate it.
- Confidence working with multiple brands and managing competing timelines without sacrificing excellence.
- Comfort owning strategy end-to-end and collaborating with copywriters, designers, and project managers.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience inside an agency or fast-paced creative environment.
- Leadership experience guiding creatives, reviewing work, or mentoring junior team members.
- Experience with service-based industries (think tattoo parlours or local restaurants, as some of our clients are in service as well)
