About the Client

Our client is a fast growing UK occupational health and workplace wellness technology company supporting a broad range of services including occupational health management, wellness checks, pilot medicals, health surveillance, audiometry, and certifications. With product lines expanding at roughly twenty percent year on year, the organisation is strengthening its engineering capacity through a Philippines hiring pilot.

This initial phase focuses on hiring experienced PHP Developers as the foundation for a larger offshore team, with potential to scale to eight or more roles based on early success.

Role Overview

We are seeking PHP Developers with strong Laravel expertise, excellent communication skills, and a proactive mindset. The role suits engineers who thrive in collaborative environments, take ownership of their code, and can work effectively with UK based technical leadership.

You will help modernise and maintain a Laravel based product suite, address technical debt, support cloud migration efforts, and strengthen engineering practices across the team. Cultural fit is a priority, especially the ability to ask questions, challenge constructively, and communicate clearly across distributed teams.

Key Responsibilities
Application Development

• Build, maintain, and enhance PHP Laravel applications that support multiple occupational health product lines.
• Work across both legacy and modernised codebases, improving structure, reliability, and long term maintainability.
• Support upgrades from Laravel 9 to Laravel 10 and future versions.
• Implement clean, well structured code aligned with best practices and modern Laravel standards.

Technical Collaboration

• Work closely with the UK tech lead for daily collaboration, problem solving, and implementation discussions.
• Participate in pair programming sessions, design reviews, and code walkthroughs.
• Communicate issues early, challenge ideas constructively, and ensure clarity before development begins.

Engineering Excellence

• Contribute to improving engineering maturity in testing, pipelines, observability, and deployment processes.
• Support creation and adoption of TDD, BDD, DDD, and continuous delivery practices as they evolve within the team.
• Strengthen system reliability through telemetry, instrumentation, and CI/CD improvements.

Cloud and Infrastructure Support

• Assist in the ongoing cloud migration from Azure to AWS.
• Collaborate with DevOps resources to optimise deployments, pipelines, and system architecture.

Required Experience

• Minimum of four to six years of hands on software development experience, with strong expertise in PHP and Laravel.
• Deep understanding of Laravel fundamentals including service container, queues, events, Eloquent, migrations, and API development.
• Strong problem solving skills with the ability to work through complex legacy systems.
• Effective communication skills with the ability to ask questions, seek clarity, and challenge constructively.
• Experience collaborating in distributed teams and participating in structured technical discussions.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular, with a preference for React for future frontend direction.
• Familiarity with Azure, AWS, cloud based architectures, or migration projects.
• Exposure to test driven development, domain driven design, and continuous delivery pipelines.
• Interest in healthcare or occupational health product domains is a plus.

Working Hours

• Initial schedule aligned with UK business hours to support onboarding and collaboration.
• Approximate working hours: 3pm to 12am Philippines time.
• Future shift adjustments may be implemented as the team grows.

Interview Process

Stage 1: Culture and Technical Fit Interview

With the UK tech leadership team, focusing on communication style, proactivity, collaboration, and senior level judgment.

Stage 2: Technical Assessment

• A two hour take home coding exercise.
• Followed by a pair programming discussion where candidates refine or extend their solution.

This approach validates practical coding ability, reasoning, and authenticity of work.
