Job Summary:

The Medical Technologist performs complex tests and analyses on body fluids and tissues to assist in diagnosing diseases and evaluating the effectiveness of treatments. This role involves operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, analyzing samples, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine and stat laboratory tests in assigned sections (Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microscopy, Serology) in accordance with established protocols and quality standards.
  • Process specimens accurately, including proper labelling, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
  • Conduct phlebotomy procedures, ensuring proper patient identification and sample collection techniques.
  • Encode, verify, and validate test results using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Comply with established turnaround time (TAT) requirements for all laboratory tests.
  • Participate in daily internal quality control (IQC) and external quality assessment (EQA/NEQAS) programs.
  • Prepare and manage reagents, controls, and consumables as needed for daily operations.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and analyzers.
  • Perform daily monitoring and documentation of equipment temperatures, reagent storage, and instrument logs.
  • Participate in the proper handling and timely documentation of send-out test requests to partner laboratories.
  • Follow biosafety protocols in the handling, storage, and disposal of biological and chemical waste.
  • Participate in morning briefings and other departmental meetings.
  • Comply with laboratory safety procedures, infection control policies, and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Report any unusual findings, technical issues, or deviations from protocol to the Senior Medical Technologist or Laboratory Head.
  • Participate in staff training, continuing education, and competency assessments as required.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Senior Medical Technologist or Laboratory Head, based on operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Medical Technologist
  • Must have Certificate of training in Biosafety and Biosecurity in RITM and/or UP-NTCBB.
  • Must have HIV Counselling Training (preferred but not required)
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
