Key Responsibilities

A lighting or electrical estimator's primary duty is to determine the total cost of a project by analyzing project blueprints, specifications, and drawings.

  • Plan Review: Review architectural, structural, and electrical drawings and specifications to understand the scope of work.
  • Quantity Takeoff: Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for all lighting fixtures, lighting control devices (switches, dimmers, sensors, panels), wiring lengths, conduits, and associated materials.
  • Cost Estimation: Calculate labor, material, and equipment costs using pricing databases, supplier quotes, and industry manuals
  • Bid Preparation: Prepare detailed and competitive project bids, proposals, and bills of materials for submission to clients or general contractors.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with project managers, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors to clarify project requirements, negotiate pricing, and ensure estimate accuracy.
  • Value Engineering: Recommend cost-effective or value-engineered lighting solutions where possible without compromising quality or design intent.
  • Documentation: Maintain organized records, documentation, and cost databases, often using software such as Microsoft Excel, Planswift, or Bluebeam.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Successful estimators possess a blend of technical expertise and soft skills:

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of lighting systems, lighting controls, electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC), and construction methods.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with estimating software (Planswift, Accubid, Bluebeam) and strong skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail is crucial for ensuring accurate takeoffs and avoiding costly errors in bids.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex information, solve problems, and make sound decisions to determine profitability and project scope.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, collaborating with teams, and presenting bids to clients.
  • Experience: Proven experience in a lighting or general electrical estimating role is typically required.
