The Procurement Manager in a construction company is responsible for sourcing construction materials, equipment, and subcontracted services at competitive prices while ensuring quality and timely delivery. This role involves developing supplier relationships, managing contracts, coordinating with project managers, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:1. Procurement Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement procurement strategies aligned with project timelines and budgets.
  • Collaborate with estimators and project managers during the tender phase to prepare accurate procurement cost estimates.
  • Plan and schedule procurement activities to ensure materials and services are available when needed on-site.

2. Supplier and Subcontractor Management

  • Identify, evaluate, and prequalify suppliers and subcontractors for construction projects.
  • Negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms for materials, equipment, and labor.
  • Maintain an approved vendor/subcontractor list and monitor performance.

3. Purchasing & Contract Management

  • Issue purchase orders and subcontractor agreements in line with project requirements.
  • Ensure all contracts and purchases comply with legal, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Manage variations, claims, and contract disputes in coordination with legal and project teams.

4. Project Coordination

  • Liaise with site managers, engineers, quantity surveyors, and logistics teams to align procurement with project schedules.
  • Monitor delivery timelines to avoid project delays or interruptions.
  • Ensure all materials delivered meet quality and specification standards.

5. Cost Control & Budget Management

  • Track procurement spend and report on budget performance.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through bulk buying, long-term contracts, or alternative suppliers.
  • Work with finance and project control teams to ensure accurate forecasting and reporting.

6. Risk & Compliance Management

  • Identify procurement risks related to delays, pricing volatility, or supply shortages and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure all suppliers and subcontractors comply with health, safety, environmental, and labor standards.
  • Maintain procurement documentation for audits and regulatory compliance.

7. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, train, and develop procurement officers or assistants.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the procurement team.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Supply Chain, or related field.
  • 5+ years' experience in procurement within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, equipment, and subcontracting practices.
  • Familiarity with construction project management tools and procurement software (e.g., Procore, SAP, Aconex).
  • Excellent negotiation, budgeting, and contract management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of construction law and regulations related to procurement and contracts.
