Plant Care Specialist I

Job Overview:

A Plant Care Specialist I is responsible for the design, maintenance and care of plant collections and displays in a conservatory setting. This role requires research to identify target plants for inclusion into living collections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with supervisors to develop plant collections that meet garden policy and area descriptions.
  • Utilizes resources such as Index Seminum and the Garden's Targeting Database to select species and develop the garden's collections.
  • Ensures compliance with national and international regulations when acquiring and sharing plants for the garden.
  • Maintains accurate plant records and updates the Living Collections Management System upon addition, relocation or death of plants.
  • Performs various landscape/maintenance tasks essential for plant preservation, protection and transplanting.
  • Researches and applies cultivation techniques to support optimal plant health.
  • Monitors temperature, light and humidity levels and identifies and treats pests and diseases.
  • Ensures proper soil fertility and adjusts irrigation systems, shade and ventilation in conservatories.
  • Maintains general care of horticultural tools and equipment.
  • Completes planting designs and requests plants as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of hands-on experience in horticulture required.
  • Working knowledge of tropical and temperate plants and general landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Experience maintaining and developing living collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct projects.
