Linux Kernel Engineering Manager

This is a critical role that involves leading technical teams in the delivery and ongoing support of all Linux kernels provided by Ubuntu Linux distribution.

  • The successful candidate will have experience managing high performing software development teams and be passionate about Linux.
  • They will be responsible for taking ownership of particular aspects of Ubuntu Linux including working with silicon or cloud partners to implement optimized Linux kernels, ensuring Ubuntu Linux runs on diverse hardware platforms, defining quality control standards, mitigating security threats, and automating build, test, and delivery processes.

This role would suit experienced managers of software development teams or technical leads who are excited to take on management responsibilities.

As an engineering manager at Canonical, your primary responsibility will be to lead, challenge, and develop strong engineers. You will facilitate technical delivery, positively influence the culture, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead distributed teams of software engineers in distinct aspects of Linux kernel delivery
  • Take ownership of specific areas of Ubuntu Linux, including optimization, hardware compatibility, quality control, and security
  • Coordinate between multiple teams to achieve common goals

Requirements:

  • Significant programming experience in C, with Python, Golang, or other like languages highly regarded
  • Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals and concepts, Linux highly regarded but not essential
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading software engineering teams
  • Ability to coordinate between multiple teams of differing technical focus
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git
  • Prior experience developing with software packaging formats, with direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience highly regarded
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging
  • Strong grasp of device drivers, BSP's, and other low-level system engineering
  • Solid background in driving CI/CD and process automation initiatives
  • Prior public involvement with open source projects
