Overview

Tenure-track assistant professor in European ethnology at the Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen. The position is permanent, full-time, available from 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Saxo Institute invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professorship in European ethnology. The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening and developing the discipline within teaching and research, with opportunities to engage in education, research initiatives, and dissemination of findings.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out original research in European ethnology and articulate ambitious plans for the field within the Saxo Institute.
  • Contribute to the institute’s educational activities across BA and MA programs in European ethnology, the MA in Applied Cultural Analysis (MACA), and the MA in Advanced Migration Studies (AMIS); supervise students; teach compulsory and elective courses; and collaborate with other programs as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement a research plan for the six-year tenure-track period that complements the institute’s profile and engages with research centers and clusters.
  • Engage in teaching with a focus on pedagogy and didactics; participate in examinations and administrative duties; and disseminate research findings to the public and relevant stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain international research networks, pursue collaborative projects and grant applications, and contribute to theInstitute’s public-facing scholarly activities.
  • Be regularly present at the institute (except during research leaves) and contribute to the institute’s teaching and research culture.
Qualifications
  • PhD degree or equivalent; demonstrated research qualifications suitable for a tenure-track assistant professorship.
  • Documented, internationally competitive research; research qualifications are the primary consideration for assessment.
  • Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching experience and qualifications are considered advantageous.
  • Interest and experience with methodological, theoretical, and analytical innovation; ability to cultivate international research networks; involvement in collaborative research initiatives; and experience with grant applications are valued.
  • Willingness to contribute to dissemination of research in the public sphere and to the institute’s educational activities.
  • Proficiency in Danish is expected within 3–6 years for interaction with colleagues and students.

Salary and Conditions

Salary and terms of appointment follow the Danish agreement; salary for Assistant Professor starts at DKK 40,600 plus an 18.07% pension contribution, with potential for annual supplements.
