Overview The Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH) invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professorship in classical archaeology. The position is a permanent, full-time appointment available from 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Responsibilities Conduct original research in classical archaeology with a focus on Greek or Roman archaeology, including use of digital methods in teaching and research. Contribute to the Saxo Institute’s diverse research activities, including seminar series and research clusters, and participate in interdisciplinary collaboration within UCPH School of Archaeology. Engage in teaching at the BA and MA level, particularly courses on the early geometric to late imperial Roman period, and introductory and/or theoretical/methodological courses, potentially co-taught with BA and MA programmes in prehistoric archaeology. Develop and sustain international research networks, participate in collaborative research initiatives and grant applications, and disseminate archaeological research to the public. Contribute to the administration, examinations, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and support overall educational activities at the Saxo Institute. Qualifications and selection criteria PhD or equivalent research qualifications required. Documented internationally competitive research; teaching qualifications are not mandatory but will be considered if available. Experience with research-based teaching, building international research networks, and involvement in collaborative research initiatives and grant applications is advantageous. Ability and willingness to disseminate research findings to the public and engage in broader outreach. Fluency and ability to work in English; Danish language expectations: non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire Danish proficiency within a reasonable period (3–6 years). Understanding of the six criteria for assistant professor appointments at UCPH (research, teaching, societal impact, organizational contribution, external funding, leadership) as a framework for assessment.
