Tenure-track assistant professor in medieval history at the Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH). The Saxo Institute invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in medieval history with a primary focus on early medieval history. The position is permanent and full-time, available from 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Responsibilities- Contribute to the institute’s diverse research activities, including seminars and research clusters.
- Document deep historical and empirical expertise within the field; work comparatively across regional and/or global contexts, including areas outside Europe and describe connections to European developments.
- Develop and implement an original and compelling six-year research plan that strengthens the history profile at the Saxo Institute.
- Engage in research-based teaching, cultivate international research networks, participate in collaborative initiatives, and pursue grant applications.
- Contribute to the dissemination of historical research in the public sphere.
- Teach and supervise students in BA and MA programmes in history, including area courses and compulsory BA-courses; contribute to Saxo Institute educational activities.
- Maintain a regular presence at the institute during the six-year tenure-track period (one semester of research leave every three years is allowed).
- Appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor requires research qualifications equal to at least a PhD degree; internationally competitive research is central.
- Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and experience are considered; outreach qualifications, including ability to attract external funding, will be considered.
- Ability to contribute to individual and group-based research, research publishing, and high international standards; capacity to contribute to examinations and administration.
- Willingness to participate in the dissemination of research findings and engagement with public audiences.
- Proficiency in English; Danish language proficiency expectations are to be achieved within a reasonable period (3–6 years) to interact with colleagues and students.
- Applications must be submitted online in English and include enclosures in PDF or Word format: letter of motivation, CV, certificates and diplomas (including PhD diploma), complete and numbered publication list, research plan, teaching portfolio, and publications with co-authorship declarations as needed.
- Applicants may submit up to five publications for assessment, with at least two published within the five years preceding the deadline; the applicant’s contribution must be clearly specified if works involve co-authors.
- Only material in English, German, Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish will be assessed.
After the application deadline, the Head of Institute selects applicants for assessment; an expert assessment committee evaluates selected candidates. Applicants are informed of the assessment status and may comment on the assessment related to themselves before final appointment.
Salary and ConditionsTerms of appointment and salary follow the Danish system; the salary range starts at DKK 40,600 (EUR 5,400) plus an 18.07% pension contribution, with possible annual salary supplements.
