Speechify is hiring for the Software Engineer, Android Core Product role in Manila, Philippines. Speechify's mission is to ensure reading is never a barrier to learning. Speechify's text-to-speech products are used by millions to turn reading materials into audio across platforms including iOS, Android, Mac, Chrome Extension, and Web. Speechify operates in a 100% distributed setup with no office.

Overview

With the growth of our Android app, we are seeking a Senior Android Engineer to help us support the expanding user base and work on new projects to push the product forward. This is a key role for someone who thinks strategically, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is passionate about making product decisions and delivering great user experiences. We are a flat organization that values leadership through technical skills and consistent, fast results. Our interview process involves several technical interviews and we aim to complete them within about 1 week.

What You Will Do

• Owning major features and collaborating with the design team to deliver high-quality features inside the app.
• Shape the future of the Android team.
• Own, maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Participate in cross-team discussions — Product, Design, Engineering.
• Review pull requests and support other teammates.
• Handle critical issues or unexpected challenges.
• Take ownership of feature releases and provide nightly builds for the QA team.

An Ideal Candidate Should Have

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Familiarity with Android components.
• Experience building or contributing to at least one Android app.
• Product design intuition and user empathy.
• Drive to push the boundaries of Android UI/UX.
• Understanding of the importance of testing and how to write tests.
• Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the spec.
• Strong experience with Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Android Animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests.
• Excellent communication skills and a user-oriented problem-solving approach.
• Ability to work with continuous feedback from leaders.

Bonus

• Experience building, maintaining, or contributing to open source projects in Android.
• Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS.
