Overview

A Field Collector is responsible for managing and recovering overdue payments from individuals or businesses on behalf of creditors. The role primarily involves contacting clients, negotiating payment terms, and ensuring that debts are paid according to agreed-upon schedules.

Responsibilities
  • Contact Debtors: Reach out to individuals or businesses who have overdue accounts via phone, email, or mail to request payment.
  • Negotiate Payment Plans: Discuss payment options with debtors, offering feasible payment plans or settlement agreements.
  • Maintain Records: Keep accurate and detailed records of communications, payment arrangements, and payment status.
  • Follow Up: Monitor the progress of outstanding accounts, following up with debtors to ensure payments are made on time.
  • Resolve Disputes: Address any concerns or disputes raised by debtors, seeking resolution while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Report to Management: Submit regular reports to management about collection efforts, payments received, and accounts still in arrears.
  • Ensure Compliance: Adhere to relevant debt collection laws, regulations, and company policies to ensure all actions are ethical and legal.
  • Skip Tracing: Use various methods to locate individuals or businesses that are difficult to reach or contact, if necessary.
  • Handle Customer Inquiries: Answer debtor inquiries regarding the status of their account or any issues they may encounter during the collection process.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (a degree may be preferred in some cases).
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in customer service or collections is often preferred.
  • Knowledge of debt collection laws, practices, and ethics.
  • Ability to work independently and handle sensitive situations with professionalism.
Work Environment

Debt collectors may work in a call center, office environment, or remotely, depending on the employer. The job often requires patience, persistence, and the ability to manage challenging situations effectively while adhering to legal guidelines.
