Job Description

The Student Learning Services/English as Additional Language Teacher creates and implements programs to support students in improving student learning outcomes. The SLS/EAL teacher works collaboratively with teachers, school counselors, parents, and other specialists to assist students with learning and language learning needs to ensure academic success.

Responsibilities

SLS

Support students with varying learning needs to gain better access to the curriculum.Support teachers and educational assistants in employing appropriate strategies for students with learning needs and those who may benefit from minimal support from time to time. Collaborate with teachers in the planning and implementation of accommodations and modifications in the curriculum and assessment for students requiring support in the classroom and evaluating the effectiveness of these.Observe and monitor students referred for possible learning support needs, prepare documentation, and work with homeroom teachers in communicating observed challenges to parents.Use basic formal and informal tools to screen for learning needs or establish a performance baseline.Read through psychological assessments and other reports from external consultants to better understand the student's learning profile and use information in the formulation of Learning Plans and IEPs. Formulate and implement Learning Plans and/or IEPs for students needing intervention, instructional accommodations, and/or modifications to improve learning outcomes.Prepare progress documentation needed for report cards, conferences with parents, and re-enrollment recommendations.Keep detailed records and files, following strict measures to maintain confidentiality, for each student in the program. Coordinate and collaborate with parents and external consultants working with students supported by the Student Learning Services program.

EAL

Support the development and implementation of a progressive and effective K-8 EAL program in alignment with the school's mission and educational goals. Provide ongoing support to teachers to enhance EAL instruction in the classroom.Refine systems for identifying, assessing and reviewing EAL students' progress on a timely basis.Coordinate and lead the assessment and monitoring of students' levels of English proficiency.Maintain a rich comprehensive data profile for individual student and our overall EAL program.Liaise with Admissions on the refinement of admissions policies and procedures as required, to identify any EAL needs prior to entry.Assess new students for language proficiency and oversee student placement into and exit from the EAL support program.Oversee the evaluation and/or transition of EAL students from year to year.Collaborate with members of the student support services teams to ensure the support and monitoring of students who may have additional academic or social/emotional needs.Collaborate with classroom teachers on the team planning and assessment of units to ensure appropriate scaffolds are in place for multilingual learners.Work alongside classroom teachers to develop and model instructional practices that offer strategies, frameworks and scaffolds that support the wide range of English proficiency levelsEngage in practices of co-teaching to maximize language learning and cultural and linguistic identity appreciation.Practice flexibility and adaptability in different teaching environments.Jointly participate in Parent/Teacher conferences alongside the classroom teacher.Promote home/parent practices of maintaining strong home languages.Communicate with parents to share the language acquisition plan as well as the ongoing progress of the learner regarding English language development. QualificationsBachelor's degree in Special Education, Psychology, or significant coursework and related experience in Learning Services.TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification or equivalentThree or more years of experience working with students within the classroom setting.At least 2-3 years of relevant experience related to:IEP planning, writing, and implementationWorking with children with academic support needs (1:1, small group)AssessmentIntervention (Literacy/Math) experience is an advantageEnglish language acquisitiondelivering the WIDA MODEL assessment/WIDA ELD Standards FrameworkKnowledge and experience in instructional program development, learning styles, cognitive, emotional, and structural support.Practical experience with study skills assessment, test taking strategies, organizational skills, note taking, and general academic skill sets.Well-established background and experience in working with multilingual children requiring English language development supportSolid understanding of the benefits and challenges of being multilingual in an international school environment and how to leverage the home language in the learning processAbility to effectively communicate information verbally and in writing in the English language (with the added ideal of additional languages)Strong skills in differentiated instruction to meet the individual learning styles and needs of multilingual learnersStrong background in evidence-based practicesSolid organization and record-keeping skillsStrong interpersonal, communication, collaboration and organizational skillsMaster's Degree holder in Special Education, Psychology, or other allied courses OR currently pursuing one is an advantage.Relevant training/certifications related to teaching children with special needs is an with special needs is an advantage.
