As the Fabrication Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, bid packages and take-offs for fabrication contracts involving structural steel and industrial components. Your focus will be on complex steel structures, large-scale fabrication, end-to-end estimation from drawings/proposals through to tender submission. You'll play a key role in supporting the company's growth in structural and industrial steel markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse structural and fabrication drawings (beams, columns, platework, hollow sections, stairs, mezzanines, railings) and generate detailed material take-offs, labour hours, plant/equipment costs, subcontractor scope and overheads.
  • Develop full cost build-up models including material procurement, fabrication shop work, surface treatment (galvanising, painting), welding, drilling/cutting, erection/installation.
  • Work closely with engineering, procurement and project management teams to verify assumptions, clarify scope, review subcontractors, and complete bid documentation.
  • Use estimation software, spreadsheets and fabrication costing tools to produce proposals, compare supplier quotes, and manage cost databases.
  • Evaluate project risks and contingencies (complex geometry, heavy sections, site conditions, access, logistics) and incorporate into estimates.
  • Benchmark historical project data and continuously update cost repository to support future bidding.
  • Prepare and present estimate summaries to internal stakeholders and clients, assisting in commercial negotiations as required.
  • Monitor tender deadlines, version control submissions, and maintain confidentiality of bid information.
  • Support post-award change order estimation and update cost tracking during project execution where required.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience in steel fabrication estimation.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in structural steel fabrication / industrial steel projects (within fabrication shops or contractors) with emphasis on estimating/tendering.
  • Strong ability to interpret fabrication drawings, structural steel schedules, detailing, and measurement of steel components (beams, columns, plates, hollow sections).
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes: cut & drill, welding (MIG/TIG/Stick), assembly, surface treatment (galvanising/painting), erection/installation.
  • Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, costing templates), AutoCAD (or similar drawing review software), and/or estimation software (preferred).
  • Understanding of steel material markets, supply lead-times, and cost drivers (steel price volatility, labour rates, logistics).
  • Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail, with ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Good communication skills to liaise with engineering, procurement, project teams and clients.
  • Self-motivated, organised, able to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet tight submission timelines.
