The Assistant Vice President (AVP) – Merchandising will be responsible for overseeing the overall merchandising strategy, product assortment, inventory management, and vendor relationships to ensure profitability and brand growth. This role requires a balance of strategic vision, market awareness, and strong leadership to deliver innovative and customer-focused merchandising solutions that align with the company's business goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Develop and implement merchandising strategies to achieve sales, margin, and inventory objectives.

  • Analyze market trends, competitor activities, and consumer insights to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align merchandising initiatives with company-wide strategies.
  • Product & Assortment Management

  • Curate and manage product assortments that reflect market demand and brand positioning.

  • Ensure proper product lifecycle management—from planning, sourcing, pricing, and promotions to end-of-life strategies.
  • Oversee seasonal and promotional planning to drive sales and optimize inventory.
  • Vendor & Supplier Management

  • Build and maintain strong vendor and supplier relationships.

  • Negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms to maximize profitability and secure favorable agreements.
  • Ensure suppliers meet quality, delivery, and compliance standards.
  • Financial & Performance Management

  • Drive sales and margin targets by monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and business plans for the merchandising division.
  • Implement cost-control measures while ensuring product availability and variety.
  • Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop merchandising teams to achieve departmental goals.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Provide training, coaching, and succession planning for high-potential team members.
Qualifications
  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Retail Management, or a related field.

  • Master's degree (MBA) preferred.
  • Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in retail merchandising, with at least 5 years in a senior management capacity.

  • Strong background in category management, product planning, sourcing, and supplier negotiations.
  • Proven track record in driving sales growth, profitability, and market expansion.
  • Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.

  • Excellent negotiation and vendor management abilities.
  • Financial acumen with experience in P&L management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic retail environment.
  • Proficiency in merchandising systems, retail analytics, and Microsoft Office Suite.
