The Material Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all materials used in the railway construction project comply with project specifications, standards, and quality requirements. The role involves reviewing, testing, inspecting, and approving materials, as well as coordinating with contractors, consultants, and laboratories to maintain strict quality control throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve material submittals, technical data sheets, and samples from contractors.
  • Verify compliance of materials with project specifications, international standards (ASTM, BS, EN, ISO, AREMA, etc.), and client requirements.
  • Conduct and witness laboratory and field testing of construction materials including aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, geotechnical materials, and railway-specific components.
  • Monitor contractors' material procurement, storage, handling, and installation procedures to ensure quality and traceability.
  • Identify non-conforming materials, issue NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports), and follow up on corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain records of material certifications, test results, approvals, and quality documentation.
  • Liaise with independent testing laboratories and verify test reports.
  • Participate in site inspections related to material applications
  • Provide technical support and advice to construction and QA/QC teams regarding materials engineering issues.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a Material Engineer in railway, infrastructure, or large-scale construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, railway track materials, and international material testing standards.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory and field testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, steel, and related materials.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (ISO 9001) and material traceability requirements.
  • Excellent documents, materials and reporting skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and external laboratories.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and material testing software/tools.
