Core Responsibilities

  • Performing Massage Techniques: A massage therapist's main role is to perform various massage techniques, or modalities. These can range from Swedish massage for relaxation to deep tissue massage for chronic pain, and specialized techniques like sports massage, prenatal massage, or hot stone therapy. They adjust their techniques and pressure according to the client's comfort and needs.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Therapists maintain accurate and confidential records of each client's condition, treatment plan, and progress over time. This ensures continuity of care and helps track the effectiveness of the therapy.

Additional Duties
  • Maintaining a Safe and Hygienic Environment: Massage therapists are responsible for keeping their workspace clean and organized. This includes sanitizing equipment, changing linens between sessions, and adhering to professional standards of hygiene.
  • Client Education: Beyond the hands-on work, therapists often provide clients with guidance on stretching, strengthening exercises, and other self-care practices to help maintain the benefits of the massage between sessions.
  • Business Operations: For those who are self-employed, job roles also include administrative tasks like scheduling appointments, managing payments, marketing their services, and handling their own inventory of oils, lotions, and other supplies.
  • Professional Development: Massage therapists are expected to engage in continuing education and professional development to stay current with industry trends and new techniques. Many will also acquire additional certifications to specialize in new modalities.
