Job description:
A Hotel Kitchen Helper is a support role within the kitchen of a hotel's commissary, which is a central kitchen responsible for preparing and supplying food items to various outlets within the hotel, such as restaurants, room service, banquets, and catering.
Duties and Responsibilities
Food Preparation
· Assist chefs and kitchen staff in basic food preparation tasks, such as chopping vegetables, preparing garnishes, or portioning ingredients.
· Follow standardized recipes and guidelines to maintain consistency in food quality.
Stocking and Organizing
· Receive and inspect deliveries of food supplies, ensuring they meet quality standards.
· Properly store and organize ingredients in designated areas within the commissary kitchen
Inventory Management
· Keep track of inventory levels and report any shortages or discrepancies to supervisors
· Assist in conducting regular inventory counts and rotation of stocks.
Cleaning and Sanitation
· Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in commissary kitchen.
· Clean and sanitize work surfaces, utensils and equipment according to health and safety regulations.
Dishwashing
· Assist in washing dishes, utensils and kitchen equipment.
· Operate and maintain dishwashing equipment in safe and efficient manner.
Assisting Chefs and Cooks
· Provide support to chefs and cooks during peak times, helping with tasks as needed.
· Assist in assembly and plating of dishes.
Waste Management
· Dispose of kitchen waste and garbage according to established procedures.
· Participate in recycling efforts as applicable.
Adhere to Safety Standards
· Follow safety protocols and guidelines in the kitchen to prevent accidents and injuries.
· Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Team Collaboration
· Work collaboratively with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth operations.
· Communicate effectively with chefs, cooks and other team members.
Learning and Development
· Seek opportunities for training and skill development to enhance job performance.
· Stay informed about food safety regulations and industry trends
Customer Service
· Support the kitchen team in meeting service standards and responding to guest requests.
· Contribute to maintaining a positive and professional kitchen environment.
Job Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent may be required.
· Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is often preferred but not always mandatory.
· On-the-job training may be provided for entry-level positions.
· Understanding of basic food and safety hygiene practices.
· Knowledge of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) Principles is a plus.
· Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting and carrying heavy items.
· Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
· Willingness to take direction from chefs and more experienced kitchen staff.
· Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic kitchen environment.
· Flexibility to handle various tasks and responsibilities as needed.
· Strong attention to detail in tasks like food preparation, portioning, and cleanliness
· Ability to follow recipes accurately.
· Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and work efficiently during busy periods.
· Basic customer service skills, as the role may involve interaction with chefs, cooks, and other kitchen staff.
· Familiarity with basic culinary techniques and kitchen equipment is a plus.
· Willingness to learn and improve culinary skills on the job.
· Awareness of safety protocols and the ability to adhere to health and safety regulations.
· Willingness to take initiative and assist with various tasks as needed.
· Proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen.
