Position Summary

The Head Nurse – OR (Ophthalmology) oversees the daily operations of the Ophthalmology Operating Room, ensuring delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative nursing care. The role supervises OR nursing staff, coordinates with surgeons and anesthesiologists, manages surgical schedules, maintains compliance with DOH, JCI, and hospital standards, and ensures optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical & Perioperative Management

  • Oversees and ensures proper implementation of sterile techniques and infection control practices.
  • Supervises pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative patient care specific to ophthalmic procedures (e.g., cataract extraction, vitrectomy, glaucoma surgeries, LASIK-related procedures).
  • Ensures correct surgical counts, specimen handling, and adherence to OR safety protocols and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
  • Monitors patient safety indicators and responds promptly to emergencies and adverse events.

2. Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Leads, trains, and mentors OR nurses, scrub nurses, circulating nurses, and OR attendants.
  • Prepares nurse schedules, manages attendance, and ensures adequate staffing for daily ophthalmic surgeries.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and identifies staff training and competency needs.
  • Ensures staff compliance with professional standards and hospital policies.

3. OR Operations & Coordination

  • Manages daily surgical lists and coordinates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other departments.
  • Ensures readiness of the OR suite, equipment, surgical instruments, phaco machines, microscopes, and other ophthalmic devices.
  • Oversees proper handling, sterilization, and rotation of surgical instruments.
  • Coordinates preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of ophthalmic OR equipment.

4. Inventory & Supply Chain Management

  • Monitors and manages supply levels of ophthalmic lenses, solutions, medications, sutures, and consumables.
  • Coordinates with the pharmacy and supply chain for timely replenishment.
  • Ensures cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high-quality care standards.

5. Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities

  • Ensures OR documentation accuracy (e.g., nurse's notes, operative records, incident reports).
  • Prepares monthly reports on OR utilization, cases handled, complications, and inventory status.
  • Ensures compliance with:
  • DOH and PhilHealth standards
  • Infection Prevention and Control protocols
  • Hospital safety programs (e.g., fire safety, biomedical waste)
  • Supports accreditation activities (DOH LTO, PhilHealth Z benefits, JCI) for the Ophthalmology OR.

6. Quality Improvement

  • Leads or participates in quality improvement projects related to surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and OR efficiency.
  • Analyzes trends in adverse events, near misses, and implements corrective actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Master's degree is an advantage ( or at least 9 units taken)
  • Valid PRC Nursing License.
  • At least 3–5 years of OR nursing experience, preferably with strong exposure to Ophthalmology.
  • At least 1–2 years of supervisory or team lead experience in a hospital OR.

Training/certification in:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Perioperative Nursing
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
