SUMMARY

The Mid-Level Cisco & Fortinet Network Engineer is responsible for implementing, managing, and troubleshooting enterprise network infrastructure using Cisco routing/switching technologies and Fortinet security platforms. The role ensures stable, secure, and optimized operations across LAN, WAN, VPN, firewall, wireless, and SD-WAN environments.

1. Network Infrastructure (Cisco)

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Cisco Layer 2/Layer 3 switches and routers.

  • Implement routing protocols: OSPF, EIGRP, BGP.

  • Configure VLANs, trunks, EtherChannel, ACLs, NAT, HSRP/VRRP.

  • Manage enterprise wireless environments using Cisco APs/WLC.

  • Perform IOS/IOS-XE upgrades, patching, and hardware replacements.

  • Monitor network health, bandwidth usage, and port utilization.

2. Firewall & Security (Fortinet)

  • Configure and manage FortiGate firewalls including policies, NAT, VIPs, IPS/AV/Web Filtering, and Application Control.

  • Maintain site-to-site and remote-access VPNs (IPsec/SSL).

  • Administer SD-WAN policies, performance SLAs, link monitoring.

  • Configure FortiAnalyzer for logging and event monitoring.

  • Manage firewall HA (Active-Passive / Active-Active).

  • Apply security hardening (CIS, ISO 27001, PCI DSS).

3. Network Operations & Troubleshooting

  • Provide L2–L3 support for LAN/WAN/firewall issues.

  • Troubleshoot VPN connectivity, routing issues, packet loss, and performance degradation.

  • Diagnose firewall policy hits, blocked sessions, NAT issues, or asymmetric routing.

  • Handle incidents, perform RCA, and implement corrective actions.

  • Work with ISPs to escalate and resolve circuit issues.

4. Documentation & Process Compliance

  • Maintain network diagrams, IP addressing, VLAN maps, and inventory.

  • Create SOPs and configuration documentation.

  • Follow ITIL Incident, Change, and Problem Management.

  • Participate in CAB approval and maintenance windows.

5. Collaboration & Project Support

  • Support infrastructure upgrades and site expansions.

  • Collaborate with Systems, Security, Cloud, and NOC teams.

  • Assist in solution design and provide input on network architecture decisions.

  • Coordinate with vendors, hardware suppliers, and providers.

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Cisco routing & switching: VLANs, STP, EtherChannel, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP.

  • FortiGate firewall expertise: policies, NAT, VPN, UTM.

  • SD-WAN concepts and deployments.

  • Network monitoring tools (SolarWinds, PRTG).

  • Wireless networking, IP addressing, TCP/IP fundamentals.

  • Logging tools (FortiAnalyzer, Syslog).

Soft Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Effective communication and task management.

Education & Certifications

Preferred:

  • Cisco CCNA (required)

  • Cisco CCNP Enterprise (preferred)

  • Fortinet NSE4 (preferred)

  • NSE5/NSE6 (advantage)

  • ITIL Foundation (plus)

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Engineering, or related field.

Work Experience

3–5 years of network and firewall administration experience, preferably in medium to large enterprise environments.
