Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Lead technical design and architectural decisions across platform features and large system components.
  • Break down complex requirements into scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Identify, prioritise, and plan improvements in performance, reliability, and technical debt.

Hands-On Development

  • Write high-quality PHP code using modern patterns (MVC, services, dependency injection).
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Develop front-end features using modern HTML, CSS, and JavaScript approaches.
  • Optimise database queries, caching layers, asynchronous tasks, and integration points.

Quality, Standards & Delivery

  • Drive engineering best practices, including testing, documentation, and maintainability.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and provide constructive feedback to the team.
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, and operations to ensure smooth and predictable delivery.

Mentorship & Collaboration

  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers through pairing, reviews, and architecture guidance.
  • Act as a technical sounding board for the team, helping guide decisions and improve standards.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning and help shape the direction of our digital products.

AI Integration

We expect senior engineers to use AI responsibly as a force multiplier, not a crutch. You'll leverage tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to:

  • Accelerate boilerplate and repetitive tasks
  • Improve documentation quality
  • Analyse code
  • Explore alternative designs while maintaining full ownership of the resulting work.

RequirementsEssential

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a full stack or backend developer
  • Strong PHP experience with an MVC framework (Yii2, Laravel, Symfony, etc.)
  • Excellent understanding of OOP, system design, and REST API architecture
  • Solid experience with SQL databases (query optimisation, indexing, schema design)
  • Exposure to caching, queues, and asynchronous workloads
  • Strong JavaScript fundamentals and comfort with front-end work
  • Experience using Git and modern CI/CD workflows
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a high attention to code quality
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Bonus

  • Experience with Proxmox or virtualisation platforms
  • Experience leading projects or mentoring developers
  • Knowledge of NoSQL stores
  • Familiarity with containerisation or cloud infrastructure
  • Automated testing experience
  • Performance tuning of production applications
  • Experience working in small, high-impact engineering teams
