JOB SUMMARY
The Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist plays a vital role as part of the multidisciplinary team in radiation therapy. This role involves leading the development and refinement of workflows, quality standards, and policies while overseeing the assessment of radiotherapy equipment and facilities.
In clinical practice, the primary responsibility is to develop and maintain a comprehensive quality assurance program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures, and computational equipment. This ensures that patients receive prescribed doses and dose distributions with a high degree of accuracy, supporting both patient safety and treatment efficacy.
As a qualified medical physicist, s/he participates in assuring the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve diagnostic or therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care. S/He ensures that quality radiation therapy service based on hospital policies, national and international standards and protocols is carried out in a timely manner. S/He leads continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities to continuously develop the quality of service in the department.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
These tasks are subject to change depending on the nature of service of the division/department or business direction.

  • Develops and maintains new or modified radiation therapy facilities, including instrumentations and computing procedures.
  • Provides the specifications, material composition and placement of the shielding needed to protect the patients, staff and the general public.
  • Ensures that all requirements for safety and functionality are met
  • Verifies the adequacy of the shielding after installation.
  • Leads in preparing equipment specifications according to the needs of the radiation therapy facility.
  • Participates in the evaluation and purchase recommendation of the equipment.
  • Analyzes the functional requirements of equipment to be purchased and specify the necessary conditions for integration, compatibility and connectivity with the existing equipment.
  • Identifies and establishes the standards applied in the acceptance and subsequent commissioning following the installation of the new equipment, such as, External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) machine, medical linear accelerator, Brachytherapy (radioactive sources), treatment planning systems (TPSs), etc.
  • Ensures that all units and systems function according to their technical specification and provides advice to Biomed personnel and the immediate superior on any deviation of equipment performance from acceptable criteria, including guidance on decommissioning when appropriate.
  • Performs or supervises the calculations and measurements, either manual or computer calculations and/or in-phantom measurement, necessary for optimizing the dose distribution of patients.
  • Ensures the proper application of radiation for different types of treatment.
  • Verifies patient-specific dose measurements and establishes tolerance and action levels of the patient.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to optimize the use of radiation in patient treatment.
  • Validates image and data transfer to and from the TPS and defines the imaging protocols used for treatment planning and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
  • Establishes QA programs in the department; performs patient-specific QA.
  • Performs QC of all radiation therapy equipment, treatment planning systems, radiation networks, and dosimetry equipment.
  • Calibrates radiation therapy equipment and brachytherapy sources according to well established dosimetry protocols or code of practice.
  • Ensures compliance of radiation therapy equipment with national and international regulations and standards.
  • May be assigned in a project that aims to improve specific areas working independently or with a cross-functional team.
  • May be tasked to make necessary recommendations on performance of team members or cross-functional team member.
  • Conducts training sessions to junior ROMPs on radiation safety, treatment planning, and quality assurance.
  • Provides Medical Physics input in the day-to-day operations of the radiation therapy facility; provides advice to Radiation Oncology personnel, especially.
  • Supervises the acceptance, commissioning and performance tests of radiation emitting equipment.
  • Provides supervision of and participates in radiation protection and

  • Prepares and analyses pertinent data as required by his/her immediate
  • superior or the management.
  • Recommends changes and updates in processes, policies, procedures or standards in the department to improve quality of service.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the area/section to ensure efficient and effective management of services.
  • Supervises unit personnel
  • Guides employee actions by implementing and updating department's policies, procedures, methods and guidelines.
  • Plans, develops, implements and facilitates the timely follow through of the technical training and professional enhancement of direct reports.
  • Ensures that they are able to gain the technical knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently perform their duties in order to gain career progression within
  • Keeps abreast of current developments, latest trends and best practices in the areas of Radiation Oncology.
  • Undertakes relevant research in collaboration with clinical staff and other researchers, in accordance with the agreed priorities of the department to identify appropriate new techniques in optimization of radiation therapy procedures and to ensure that these are carried through to a successful conclusion and/or recommendations.
  • Participates in audit and research and development activities and present results at management meetings and/or publish work in appropriate journals/publications.
  • Oversees the development and placement of safety strategies and continuous quality improvement of service initiatives in the department.
  • Actively involves oneself in the planning and execution of his/her professional development in collaboration with the immediate superior.
  • Monitors progress and completion of trainings required to establish his/her career or set for the next likely role.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or requested by immediate superior or management from time to time.
  • Mentors and/or trains the junior members of the unit to ensure proper cascading and/or learning of technical know-how and soft skills that contribute to the achievement of the unit's objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has completed a Bachelor's degree in Physics or Engineering or an equivalent physical science.
  • Has completed a Master's degree in Medical Physics or its equivalent.
  • Has at least three (3) years of relevant clinical experience as a ROMP in a Radiation Oncology facility with leadership role.
  • Has at least two (2) years of participation in the ROMP clinical residency in cooperation with the Society of Medical Physics in the Republic of the Philippines (SMPRP) or has submitted portfolio to the Philippine Board of Medical Physics - Section of Radiation Oncology Medical Physics for certification purposes and experience in supervisory or lead role.
  • Must be keen on scientific methodology and systematic approach to problems or tasks.
  • Ability to handle QA on radiation therapy equipment.
  • Ability to conduct treatment planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain effective professional relationships and/or partnerships.
  • Possess a current certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) training.
  • Healthcare industry experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic corporate office software, including Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Good communication skills. Proficiency in the Visayan dialect and/or Tagalog is required; ability to communicate well in English is an advantage
