Job description:

As a Senior API Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and supporting domain APIs that underpin the bank's digital customer experiences. You will apply your expertise in Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, and API standards to deliver secure, reusable, and high-performing integration services.

You will play a critical role in shaping and delivering the API integration blueprint in partnership with architecture, ensuring alignment to enterprise patterns and our zero-trust security approach. Your work will enable resilient, observable, and scalable APIs that form the foundation for customer-facing experiences across the bank.

You will also champion engineering best practice across automated testing, performance engineering, and continuous delivery, while deploying APIs to OpenShift and AWS in line with operational standards. By designing for reusability, simplification, and observability, you will help deliver faster time-to-market, improved resilience, and stronger customer outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering

• Design, build, and maintain secure, reusable, and high-performing APIs using Java/Kotlinand Spring Boot
• Apply API design standards and reusable patterns to ensure consistency, scalability, and maintainability
• Implement automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and quality gates to embed resilience and reduce risk
• Engineer APIs for observability, performance, and scalability, ensuring they meet enterprise standards
• Integrate APIs with identity and access management solutions to enable secure authentication and authorisation.

Delivery

• Translate solution designs and architectural blueprints into working APIs aligned to enterprise integration standards
• Deploy and manage APIs on OpenShift and AWS, ensuring compliance with operational, security, and risk frameworks
• Partner with architects, security, and platform teams to ensure solutions are safe, scalable, and resilient
• Embed continuous improvement practices, enhancing automation, monitoring, and delivery effectiveness

Collaboration

• Work closely with architects, engineers, testers, and business teams to deliver end-to-end API solutions
• Partner with the Integration Technical Lead and broader Architecture team to influence the API integration blueprint
• Share expertise and coach peers, uplifting engineering maturity and promoting best practice
• Foster a culture of simplification, reuse, and observability across the engineering community

Qualification and requirements:

Experience

• 7+ years software engineering experience, with a strong focus on API design and development
• Proven experience delivering APIs in large, complex environments, ideally within the banking or financial services industry
• Expertise in Spring Boot with Java and/or Kotlin, including building and deploying enterprise-grade APIs
• Demonstrated experience in API standards, integration patterns, and reusable service design
• Background in deploying and supporting APIs on containerised and cloud platforms such as OpenShift and AWS
• Strong knowledge of automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering for resilience and performance
• Familiarity with observability practices and tools to ensure performance, monitoring, and reliability
• Experience integrating with customer identity and access management solutions highly regarded

Non-negotiable skills & requirements:

• At least 5 years professional experience within Information Technology ideally in the financial services industry, ideally across businesses or divisions
