Job Summary

We are hiring a Linux System Engineer responsible for our Linux platforms across our UK based data centers and a vital member of our amazing team.

This is a hands-on position where the Linux System Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, automation, and secure operation of the infrastructure. They are responsible for ensuring the performance, security, and reliability of these systems, often managing servers, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing configurations. This role requires a strong understanding of Linux, hardware, software, and networking concepts, as well as the ability to automate tasks and troubleshoot complex technical problems.

In addition to technical skills, you should also have strong communication skills with other members of the team and be able to write clear and concise manuals and how-to documents.

This is a fully remote position and, generally, you will be working normal UK working hours (GMT).  There will be a regular opportunity to visit the rest of the team in the UK.

You must ensure that you have a reliable Internet and electricity supply.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design and Implementation: Planning and setting up Linux-based systems, including servers, networks, and applications.

Platform Upgrades: Planning and executing upgrades of operating systems, software, and hardware to ensure systems are current, secure, and performing optimally.

System Administration: Managing and monitoring Linux servers, ensuring they are running efficiently and securely.

Incident Response: Responsible for quickly identifying and resolving issues that arise in production environments, often acting as a first point of escalation for technical problems.

Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Diagnosing and resolving issues related to hardware, software, and network connectivity.

Automation: Developing and using scripts and tools to automate routine tasks and improve efficiency.

Disaster Recovery: Develop, test and maintain disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Documentation: Creating and maintaining documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.

On Call: Participate in on-call responsibilities with team and identify gaps and problems with monitoring, alerting, and service level objectives.

Essential Skills:

Linux Administration: Proficiency in managing and troubleshooting Linux systems (e.g. Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, CentOS etc).

Cloud Technologies: Familiarity with on-premise cloud platforms like CloudStack or OpenStack.

Automation Tools: Experience with configuration management tools like Ansible or Chef.

CI/CD: Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and monitoring tools.

Hardware and Software Knowledge: Familiarity with server hardware, networking equipment, and various software applications.

Networking Fundamentals: Knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, firewalls, and other networking concepts.

Scripting and Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages like Bash, Python, or Perl.

Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.

Communication and Collaboration Skills: Ability to effectively communicate technical information and work with others.
