Job Summary

The Assistant Photographer supports the Lead (or Principal) Photographer in preparing and executing photoshoots (studio, location, or both). They help with equipment setup, lighting, logistics, and post‑production tasks to ensure shoots run smoothly and images meet quality standards.


Key Responsibilities / Duties

These are typical duties performed by an Assistant Photographer:

  • Prepare and transport photographic equipment: cameras, lenses, lights, tripods, backdrops, reflectors, etc.
  • Set up and break down studio or on‑location gear; ensure lighting and backgrounds are arranged according to plan.
  • Check that all equipment is in working order (batteries charged, memory cards/formats correct, lights working).
  • Assist with lighting adjustments and test shots under the photographer's direction.
  • Help arrange props, set dressings, backgrounds, and coordinate with stylists/models to get ready for shoots.
  • Manage digital files: downloading, backing up, organizing, renaming, archiving.
  • Assist in post‑production: basic editing, color correction, retouching (as needed) under guidance.
  • Maintain studio or gear inventory; ensure supplies are stocked.
  • Support logistics: scheduling shoots, communicating with clients/models, scouting locations, securing permits when necessary.
  • Keep the workspace clean and organized; after shoots, pack up equipment properly.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Typical qualifications for someone to succeed in this role:

  • Basic photography knowledge: familiarity with different types of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, exposure, etc.
  • Competency in photo editing software (e.g. Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop) for simple edits, color correction, retouching.
  • Good organisational skills: managing equipment, scheduling, file management.
  • Attention to detail (e.g., in lighting, composition, equipment settings).
  • Physical stamina: able to carry gear, stand for long periods, work in varying environments (indoors, outdoors, sometimes under time pressure).
  • Good communication skills (with photographer, clients, models, other crew).

Additional / Preferred

These are not always required, but good to have:

  • Relevant education (e.g. diploma or degree in photography or related field) or prior assisting experience.
  • Familiarity with both studio lighting and natural/ambient lighting setups.
  • Experience with video or motion‑capture (depending on role) if needed.
  • Flexibility in schedule—able to work weekends, travel to locations, or work long hours when shoots demand.
