Shift Supervisor in a packaging house is primarily responsible for overseeing daily packaging operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety standards are consistently met. Key duties include managing personnel, monitoring production targets, and collaborating with other departments to ensure seamless operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Operations Management: Supervise and coordinate daily production and packaging activities on the assigned shift, ensuring workflow is smooth and targets are met. This includes preparing production schedules and assigning tasks to employees.
  • Quality Control: Conduct regular quality checks to ensure all finished products meet company and industry standards and specifications. This may involve inspecting materials and products and documenting results.
  • Safety and Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols, maintain a clean and hazard-free environment, and ensure compliance with all safety and sanitation regulations (e.g., GMP, food safety if applicable). They are often the first responder to safety incidents.
  • Team Leadership and Training: Lead, mentor, and motivate packaging staff. Responsibilities include training new employees, conducting performance evaluations, resolving conflicts, and addressing disciplinary issues.
  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Identify and resolve operational issues or bottlenecks in the packaging process. This involves coordinating with the maintenance department for equipment issues and performing simple proactive maintenance during the shift.
  • Inventory and Reporting: Monitor inventory levels of packaging materials and supplies, coordinating with inventory and logistics teams to ensure availability. The role also involves maintaining accurate production records and submitting reports to management.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven experience in a supervisory role within a manufacturing or production environment is typically required.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential for managing a diverse team.
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to think quickly and make decisions under pressure to resolve issues efficiently and minimize downtime.
  • Attention to Detail: A detail-oriented mindset is crucial for maintaining quality standards and accurate documentation.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding packaging materials, equipment, and manufacturing processes is beneficial.
