Job Summary

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic specializing in tower cranes and mobile cranes is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing crane systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role focuses on mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and structural components of cranes used on construction and industrial sites.

Key Responsibilities Maintenance & Inspection

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on tower cranes and mobile cranes
  • Inspect cranes for wear, damage, and safety compliance
  • Lubricate moving parts and replace worn components
  • Conduct pre-operation and post-operation inspections

Diagnostics & Repair

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic system issues
  • Repair or replace engines, gearboxes, brakes, winches, wire ropes, and bearings
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses
  • Repair electrical systems, including sensors, limit switches, control panels, and wiring

Crane-Specific Duties

  • Assist with tower crane erection, climbing, and dismantling (as required)
  • Align booms, jibs, slewing rings, and hoisting mechanisms
  • Ensure load moment indicators (LMI) and safety systems function correctly
  • Calibrate crane controls and safety devices

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety regulations, manufacturer guidelines, and site procedures
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions or equipment defects
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records
  • Comply with local and international crane safety standards

Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with crane operators, site supervisors, and engineers
  • Provide technical advice on crane operation and maintenance
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency repair situations on-site

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of crane mechanics and systems
  • Understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and service diagrams
  • Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Strong problem-solving and attention to detail

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or technical/vocational training (preferred)
  • NC II Certification, apprenticeship in heavy equipment or crane mechanics (preferred)
  • Relevant work experience with tower cranes and mobile cranes
  • Valid driver's license (and additional site certifications as required)

Physical & Work Conditions

  • Ability to work at heights and in outdoor environments
  • Capable of lifting heavy components
  • Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or emergency call-outs
