Their responsibilities include producing and revising detailed designs, collaborating with engineers and designers, maintaining documentation, and occasionally overseeing the implementation of their designs in the field. Key responsibilities

  • Create and revise drawings: Produce accurate technical drawings, blueprints, and layouts based on project requirements.
  • Collaborate with teams: Work closely with engineers, architects, and project managers to ensure accuracy and discuss design ideas.
  • Manage documentation: Maintain and organize a directory of drawings and update design files for production.
  • Develop designs: Create designs from scratch or work from rough drafts to present to clients for approval.
  • Oversee implementation: Occasionally go to the field to ensure designs are being implemented correctly.

Qualifications and skills

  • Education: A degree in engineering, architecture, drafting, or a related field is often required, though some employers may accept an associate degree or a strong design portfolio.
