The Welder in the Motorpool Department is responsible for performing welding tasks to repair, fabricate, and maintain various vehicle parts, heavy equipment, and motorpool-related structures. This role requires a solid understanding of welding techniques, metalwork, and vehicle repair procedures. The Welder must also adhere strictly to safety protocols to ensure safe and high-quality work.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Vehicle and Equipment Repair:

o    Perform welding repairs on vehicle frames, exhaust systems, and other structural components of vehicles and equipment in the motorpool.

o    Weld and fabricate parts needed to repair or maintain motorpool equipment, including trucks, forklifts, bulldozers, and other heavy machinery.

o    Reinforce weak structures on vehicles and equipment as required, ensuring all repairs meet structural and safety standards.

Inspection and Quality Control:

o    Conduct visual and technical inspections of welds to ensure strength, durability, and adherence to specifications.

o    Utilize non-destructive testing methods, where necessary, to verify the quality and integrity of repairs.

o    Perform adjustments or re-welds on defective areas to maintain high standards of work.

Preventative Maintenance of Equipment:

o    Regularly inspect and maintain welding tools and equipment, ensuring they remain in optimal working condition.

o    Report any defective welding equipment and arrange repairs to prevent delays in motorpool operations.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with Fabrication and Assembly:

o    Assist in fabricating and assembling metal parts or accessories for vehicles and motorpool infrastructure as required.

o    Support motorpool mechanics by welding replacement parts or creating metal components needed for repairs.

Documentation and Reporting:

o    Complete work orders, documenting materials used, techniques applied, and time spent on each welding task.

o    Record any issues or challenges encountered during the welding process and communicate these to the Motorpool Supervisor.

Support Motorpool Operations:

o    Assist in moving vehicles, tools, and supplies around the motorpool area as necessary.

o    Ensure proper storage of materials and safe handling practices to prevent contamination or damage to welding supplies.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in welding or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in welding, with experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair an advantage.

  • Other Skills:

  • Proficiency in various welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and arc welding.

  • Ability to read vehicle schematics, technical drawings, and repair manuals.
  • Strong attention to detail, precision, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Physical stamina to work in challenging positions and lift heavy materials.
