Software Engineering Manager Job Description

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead a distributed team of engineers and ensure they are growing professionally. This includes managing key performance indicators, providing training, and supporting timely delivery of bug fixes and patches.

As a software engineering manager in the sustaining engineering team, you will be responsible for hiring, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback to your team members. You will also manage expectations with other engineering teams and external stakeholders.

This role entails demonstrating the best of Canonical in customer interactions, advocating modern software development practices, and growing a healthy collaborative engineering culture. Collaborating with other teams in the organization and working from home with global travel up to 10% for internal and external events.

Job Requirements
  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software development, leadership experience displaying ability to organize and prioritize complex problem resolution and bug fixes.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with debugging tools such as GDB, Crash, or other.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with Linux, with a preference towards Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
