Medical Coder Job Description

  • The primary role of a medical coder is to accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes to patient records using the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS or other designated coding classification systems in accordance with coding rules and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Abstract clinical information from patient records and code diagnoses and procedures accurately, including modifiers, while resolving any coding edits that arise.

  • Respond to audits and make necessary changes to coded accounts based on agreed findings.

  • Comply with the AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding at all times.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • At least 1 year of experience performing inpatient medical record coding.

  • Hold AHIMA or AAPC coding credentials (CPC, CIC, CCS) as a minimum requirement.
