Frontend Developer

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets.

We are a pioneer of globally distributed collaboration, with 1100+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.

We are hiring an experienced UI Engineer to develop data-rich and reliable user experiences using JS, CSS, React, and Flutter. These frontends serve as Canonical's enterprise products that act as the company's face to its users.

To create consistency across our products and sites, we have a central team that builds an open-source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework. We aim to further develop this framework and explore its potential in helping more open-source projects build performant and accessible interfaces that respond well to diverse layouts.

Our team utilizes REST APIs for communication, and API design is considered an important aspect of the process.

Flutter is a new front-end technology that has the potential to unify our desktop and web development. We are expanding the team's exposure to Flutter and have roles on both web and Ubuntu engineering for this specialism.

1. Design and implement well-tested and documented software in Web technologies or Flutter.
2. Debug and fix issues encountered by users

We seek someone with a strong academic track record from both high school and university. An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about their alternative path is preferred. You should also have drive and a track record of going above and beyond expectations.

You must be well-organized, self-starting, and able to deliver to schedule. A professional manner in interacting with colleagues, partners, and community is essential. Experience designing and writing high-quality Web technologies is required, as is experience with and passion for Typescript, React, or Flutter.

An eye for accessibility and performance is also necessary. Professional written and spoken English is a requirement, as is experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).

Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability are also expected. Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation are highly valued. Excellent communication and presentation skills are also required, as is result-oriented behavior with a personal drive to meet commitments.

Able to travel twice a year, for company events for up to two weeks each is also a requirement.

Experience with container tech such as LXD, Docker, and Kubernetes is desired. Attention to detail concerning user-centric UI development is also a plus.

REST API design, development, and governance is another desirable skill. Performance engineering and security experience is also highly valued.
