Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced front-end developer to join our team as an independent contractor. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality front-end development solutions using modern technologies and best practices.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in WordPress, Shopify, and React-based builds, with expertise in custom theme development, Gatsby, and CSS/JS modularization. They will work closely with the lead developer to implement complex builds, solve technical challenges, and ensure seamless collaboration.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering high-quality front-end development solutions on time and reliably meeting project deadlines.
  • Collaborating effectively with the team to deliver complex builds and solve technical challenges.
  • Developing custom WordPress themes using ACF and modular CSS/JS.
  • Building custom Shopify themes and extending functionality as required.
  • Delivering React-based front-end builds using Gatsby for static and hybrid websites.
  • Translating designs and requirements into maintainable, performant code.
  • Applying advanced site optimisation techniques (Core Web Vitals, caching, lazy loading, image optimisation, etc).
  • Ensuring accessibility, responsive behavior, and SEO best practices are consistently applied.
  • Working with Git using a branch/pull request/merge workflow.
  • Using modern toolchains (Webpack, Vite, Babel, npm/yarn) to improve development efficiency and code quality.
  • Integrating and consuming third-party APIs.
  • Configuring and implementing advanced analytics and tracking solutions, including Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, with custom event tracking, data layer integrations, and conversion optimisation setups.
  • Troubleshooting issues across front-end, WordPress, Shopify, React, and server environments.
  • Implementing animations and micro-interactions with performance and UX in mind.
  • Staying up-to-date with modern front-end and CMS development practices.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS (Flexbox, Grid), and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
  • Strong ability to hand-code solutions rather than rely heavily on plugins.
  • Advanced experience with custom WordPress theme development and Shopify builds.
  • Solid experience with React, including building projects in Gatsby or similar.
  • Deep understanding of ACF and WordPress customisation best practices.
  • Proficient with CSS pre-processors like SCSS and building maintainable design systems.
  • Experience with JavaScript tooling (Webpack, Vite, Babel, npm/yarn).
  • Familiarity with Git workflows in a collaborative team environment.
  • Proficiency in integrating APIs and handling asynchronous data.
  • Skilled in optimising websites for speed, accessibility, and SEO.
  • Comfortable troubleshooting server-related issues (LAMP/LEMP environments, hosting setups).
  • Fluent in English with strong written and verbal communication skills.
