Senior Engineering Manager Job Description

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead the engineering team responsible for delivering essential components of Ubuntu. This is a fast-paced role that requires problem-solving and technical expertise operating at the core of Linux server systems.

This position involves leading a distributed team of engineers, demonstrating sound engineering principles through active leadership, and being responsible for planning, estimation, and execution. You will work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu and collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams.

You will drive the advancement and adoption of software development practices and design great engineering and organizational practices. Additionally, you will grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and grow a team of distributed engineers
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership
  • Be responsible for planning, estimation, and execution
  • Work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams
  • Drive the advancement and adoption of software development practices
  • Design, embrace, and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience working with Linux distributions and packaging technologies
  • Proven experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go toolchains, ARM, and/or RISC-V
  • Engagement with open-source communities and processes
