Software Development Leader

This position leads one of our regional teams and is responsible for ensuring that they are growing as engineers, making valuable contributions, and generally having a great experience at Canonical. Technical leadership and a solid background in software development are essential skills for this role. The team is well staffed with experts in every time zone and resourced to ensure a good work-life balance and ongoing development of each team member.

The successful candidate will have professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages. They will also be knowledgeable and passionate about software development, with leadership experience demonstrating the ability to organize and prioritize complex problem resolution and bug fixes. Experience with version control systems such as git and debugging tools such as gdb or crash is desirable. Strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality is required.

Key responsibilities include managing and leading a distributed team of engineers, hiring, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback, and career development guidance. The role also involves setting and managing expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders. Advocating and advancing modern software development practices and growing a healthy, collaborative engineering culture are also key aspects of this position.

Our customers build large-scale mission-critical infrastructure and application solutions on Ubuntu and open source from Canonical. While not actively developing products, Sustaining Engineering solves problems for the customer and for the benefit of the wider Open Source community. This team is responsible for continuously improving various open source software by resolving software defects reported by customers. Software stack includes everything from the kernel all the way up to the user space applications and IaaS platforms.
